Based on a true story, a children's entertainer is targeted by a cynical journalist assigned to write a biopic of him. But kindness and decency triumph in a bewitchingly disarming and subtle way, forcing the journalist to confront his own demons and to get his life back on track.

Winner of the L'Oeil d'Or at Cannes in 2017, this charming and poignant odd couple road-trip follows veteran director Agnès Varda and street-artist JR, as they travel the byways of France, collecting portraits of the people they meet and pasting them in giant copies on the sides of buildings.

HARROGATE FILM SOCIETY AT A GLANCE

Now in its 64th year, Harrogate Film Society is run by a group of film enthusiasts in an informal, welcoming atmosphere. Once again, we are proud to present a programme of critically acclaimed and diverse films from all over the world, in turn entertaining and thoughtful, sometimes unusual and stimulating, virtually all rarely screened in the United Kingdom.

All films are presented using the latest digital technology in comfortable surroundings.

Harrogate Film Society is a member of Cinema for All and The British Film Institute.

ACTIVITIES

As well as our core programme of contemporary films from around the world, we also sponsor and actively support the annual Harrogate Film Festival, and organize occasional film-related events in the local community under the banner of 'Flash Film'.

HARROGATE FILM FESTIVAL

Harrogate Film Society has sponsored and supported the festival since its inception. Films we have screened under the auspices of the festival include Reservoir Dogs, American Psycho and The House That Jack Built.

FLASH FILM

With this initiative, our goal is to promote film in the local community. Films we have shown under this banner include Some Like it Hot, Brooklyn and Cabaret, in venues as varied as the North Bar, the Manhattan Club and Harrogate Theatre.

JOIN US

Membership of the society is open to anyone aged 16 or over. The cost of membership for a full season is £38 and this gives you free entry to all films on the society's core programme. If you just want to attend individual screenings without joining the society, the cost of a pay-as-you-go ticket for a single film is £5 (£3 for students aged 16-19).
