About the Event

All We Imagine As Light | 2024 | 15 | Dir. Payal Kapadia | India | IMDb 7.1 | Sub-titled | 119 mins

Indian film maker Payal Kapadia’s beautifully and lyrically filmed All We Imagine as Light is a gentle and heartwarming story that offers an insight into the spectrum of the attitudes and experiences of women living in the heart of contemporary Mumbai.

Deservedly topping Sight and Sound’s best film Poll of 2024 it follows the fortunes of Prabha, Anu and Parvaty, 3 female co-workers at a Mumbai hospital, over each of whom hangs a shadow of uncertainty about their respective futures.

Nurse Prabha’s husband is living in Germany, and she has not heard from him in over a year. Her younger roommate Anu is conducting a secret relationship with a Muslim man and Parvaty, a cook at the hospital, is fighting an unscrupulous construction worker who wants to demolish her apartment.

All three are struggling to make a home in this multi-cultural ‘City of Dreams’ whilst grappling with economic, religious and gender limitations. Nonetheless they find connection and solace in female friendship.
